The greatest detriment to my personal testimony – is me. The person who stands in the greatest need of forgiveness, both from you, others, and God – is me. The person I know who fails God more than anybody else – is me. And the most undeserving person of God’s salvation, grace, mercy, and anointing upon their life – is me. In fact, I believe that had I been present at the Passover meal with Jesus and heard him say that somebody would betray Him before the night was over; I too would have been asking, “Is it me?”
We look at our world and see the vile, wicked sinful state it is in and wonder who is to blame. One small word: Me! We look at our churches and see their impotent Spiritual state and the “dumbing down” of Biblical standards and we wonder who allowed this. One small word: Me! We look at the mockery that is being made of the Biblical definition of a family – evidenced by the erosion of: gender, the sanctity of marriage, discipline, and order – and we wonder who allowed this to happen. One small word: Me!
Me. It’s such a small but powerful word! And it’s not until we begin to acknowledge it as the root cause of all our problems, and begin to take steps to address its actions, that we can hope for anything better in our lives! You see, it’s a lot easier for me to blame the government, the church, the school system, or even you for the problems in America today. However, in reality, the problem is: Me. The words of an old song come to mind, “Not my brother, nor my sister, but it’s me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer … Not the elder, nor the deacon, but it’s me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer … Not my father, nor my mother, but it’s me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer … Not the stranger, nor my neighbor, but it’s me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer.”
I ran across a prayer the other day on Facebook. I have no idea who wrote it, or I would give credit. It resonated in my spirit. I want to share it with you today. It simply says:
“Lord:
Enlighten what is dark – in me,
Strengthen what’s weak – in me,
Mend what’s broken – in me,
Bind what’s bruised – in me,
Heal what’s sick – in me,
And lastly,
Revive whatever peace and love has died – in me. Amen.”
My momma used to say it this way, “Boy, get your own doorsteps swept around before you try to sweep around somebody else’s.” The only way I can change the world – is by changing: Me!
And so it goes with you!
